Спать отдельно в период ниды - одна из самых неприятных для меня вещей в иудаизме.
Насчёт нехватки места - Мишна и Гемара, а равно Рамбам, таки обсуждают, кому с кем можно спать (например, отец может спать с дочерью, а мать с сыном, пока те не начинают стесняться).
