Some countries (e.g., those around the African Horn - Somalia, Ethiopia etc) can feed themselves only in case of a "bumper" crop. Those regions are experiencing a man-made ecological disaster on the scale unimaginable to the industrial societies.
To save the permanently starving, send them contraceptives instead of food.

Date: 2006-08-17 06:05 pm (UTC)And/or genetically modified plants. Last year NPR, of all sources, put on a documentary about GMO in Africa. It featured an Ethiopian farmer, who was part of a pilot program with UMich, brandishing a huge GMO legume in one hand and a small regular one in the other and complaining: "These things can feed our whole village! Why do these so-and-so's forbid importing them?"

nothing will help people who have kinds they know they will not be able to feed. trying to help such people is immoral.
