Two movies took America by storm: Slumdog Millionaire (2008) and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000).
They have a lot in common:

  1. Both come from a humongous rapidly developing country which evokes intense curiosity and mild fear

  2. Both won quite a few Oscars

  3. Both pretend to be at least somewhat high brow, i.e. "not just entertainment"

  4. Both enjoy very high (8+!) "IMDB User Ratings", probably because the "Users" feel flattered that they understand a "high brow" movie

  5. Both have idiotic plots, lousy choreography, boring dialogs, and more!

  6. In my view of a male chauvinist pig, they would have been at least somewhat redeemed had they have a pretty girl, but no, not a single pretty girl in either movie

  7. Neither is worth your time

I liked both, despite the admittedly idiotic plots!
And Latika /was/ pretty, thanks very much. :P

"Тигра/Дракона" я смотрел, и вполне согласен. Спасибо, что избавил нас от "Миллионера".

And CTHD had awesome fighting... who needs pretty girls when you have people hitting each other with pointy objects?

fighting choreography was pretty lousy by any standard.
cf. Kill Bill or any other Hollywood or Hong Kong Kung Fu movie.

Latika was OK. Nothing special.
Certainly not good enough to save a movie.

Oh yeah, Kill Bill was AWESOME! But come on, despite the lousy choreography, the fighting in CTHD had a certain charm. :)

it would have had, had it not been billed as the best thing since sliced bread.
the movie was so overhyped, that I really expected more from it.

Sarka loved SM. She admitted that the end was somewhat corny (I didn't watch it so cannot offer my opinion), but still the movie according to her was "awesome".

the whole thing was corny beyond belief.

it is a teenager-targeting manipulative corny film. she felt being manipulated, but still the manipulation achieved the goal. it is certainly way overhyped, but still, imho, it's far from being as bad as the crouching w/e

I haven't watched either so I'll take your word for it.

And, btw, why are you here?

Спасибо, что избавил нас от "Миллионера".
Рад стараться!
Привет Илане!
И, это - "взвейтесь кострами!"

Thank G-d! I thought I was the only one :)

The only thing "Slumdog.." was missing was the dead elephant!
